Generating traffic to your website can take a lot of effort and hard work. Most marketers try to do SEO without any idea of what they are doing.

It’s no secret how the Internet is overflowing with SEO how-to articles, but do they work? You only know when a particular approach works if you see a successful website that uses it with your own eyes.

What if there’s a way to spy and copy that successful website’s SEO techniques? Now, this is what SEMrush claims to achieve.

Whether that is true or not, I will help you get the answer through this SEMrush review. Lucky for you, I have already done the heavy lifting and spent some time scrutinizing this product.

I will run through its pricing plans, platform tools, pros and cons, and my own experience with the product.

Overview

What exactly is SEMrush?

In general, SEMrush is a software product that helps manage online presence and content marketing.

Since Dmitry Melnikov and Oleg Shchegolev developed it in 2008, more than 7 million businesses and online marketers throughout the world have already benefited from this product.

With SEMrush, you can access local SEO tools such as listing management, position tracking, site audit, and on-page SEO checker.

Advertising

Another feature of SEMrush involves advertising. In this feature, SEMrush helps you analyze your market and determine the most effective keywords.

Content marketing topic research

Have you heard of the phrase “Content is King“? This is quite popular among digital marketers and website owners.

In the past, many people think that the quantity of content is more important than its quantity. Some even stuff their content with keywords hoping to get noticed by search engine crawlers

Well, times have changed, and the Google algorithm has evolved. To be successful in marketing content creation, you need to keep in mind that quality is still the king.

SEMrush can help you with that through its content marketing features, including topic research, SEO content template, SEO writing assistant, brand monitoring, post tracking, and most importantly, content audit.

This SEMrush key feature gives you just that. It allows you to see what’s inside your competitor’s website, how they are doing, and what you can do to compete.

In this competitive research toolkit, you will see the general picture of your competition, its SEO, advertising, social media, content, and PR.

Free Subscription Limitations

Now, you may be wondering, what if you chose to cancel your subscription and downgrade to the free version of SEMrush? What tools can you still use? What are the limitations?

Ten keyword and domain searches per day

In the keywords analytics and domain analytics databases, you can perform searches and pull a report.

If you opt to be a free version user, you can only search a keyword or a domain ten times per day. That includes the domains you click on in the report.

Pro users can perform 3000 searches per day while Guru and Business users can search 5000 and 10000 per day, respectively.

No historical data

If you are a free version user, you are not able to keep your recent searches. Paid users get to save up to 350 of their most recent searches through the Keyword Magic Tool.

One project only

A project is a dashboard that displays the metrics of 12 individual tools. As a free version user, you are only allowed to manage one project.

Pro package includes five projects, while Guru and Business packages include 15 and 40, respectively.

Only ten keywords to track

SEMrush features a Position Tracking Tool available to free users but limited to 10 keywords to track.

Ten keywords are usually inadequate, depending on the size of your campaign.

If you wish to upgrade to the Pro level package, you can track up to 500 keywords. The Guru level package allows you to track 1500 keywords, while the Business package gives you 5000 keywords.

Search Your Keyword Now

100 pages to crawl

Do you want to examine the health score of your website? SEMrush can give you that through its Site Audit. The free version is limited to 100 crawled pages only per month.

Pro users can have 100,000 pages to crawl per month. Guru allows 300,000 pages, while the Business package allows up to a million pages per month.

Two topic research queries

Both free and Pro level users are only allowed two topic research queries. The Topic Research tool provides a list of topics and subtopics for content ideas.

If you want to have an unlimited number of queries, you need to subscribe to Guru or Business package.

One PDF report

PDF reports help you communicate data about your website results more clearly. That includes your website audit, marketing campaign progress, and competitive analysis.

Free users can only schedule one PDF report. Pro users can have five reports. Guru gets to schedule 20 reports, while Business users have 50.

Both Guru and Business level users can utilize the Google Data Studio integration.

Now that you already have a glimpse of the limitations of free subscriptions, you now have some more information to help you decide whether or not to remain a free user.

However, if you believe a free version of SEMrush is not enough, you can subscribe to the paid plans.

If you have some doubts, you can also avail yourself of the SEMrush 30-day free trial, a risk-free way to try the product’s effectiveness.

Pros

Complete features

SEMrush is packed with a wide array of features. You can do almost all of your SEO and marketing efforts in the same place.

Organized data

Even though SEMrush provides a considerable quantity of data, its interface is organized logically. It also presents data visualizations and graphs to make the metrics easy to understand.

Link building

Do you need help with your outreach? This link-building functionality of SEmrush incorporates CRM-like features.

Efficient website auditing

The website audit report provides a set of instructions that is easy to follow. You can easily make improvements to your website’s on-page and technical SEO.

domain audit

Quantity reporting

Do you need to pull many reports every day? Compared to its competing tools, SEMrush allows more reports to be created in a single day.

Cons

Google data only

SEMrush provides data for only one search engine, and that is Google. Suppose you want to explore data on several search engines. In that case, this might be a drawback for you, especially since other tools include data from more than one search engine.

One user account only

SEMrush subscription plans come with only one user account. If you want to add a user, you need to pay extra, which is slightly pricey.

Customer support

There are three ways you can ask customer support in SEMrush – through chat, email, and phone, which beats that of its competition. The negative is that it isn’t available on the weekend and it isn’t 24/7.

Limited number of projects

Did you know that you can only run a limited number of projects at a given time in SEMrush? This might come as a downside for some, particularly because some of the software’s functionalities are only available as part of these projects.

Additional costs

You may have access to a wide array of tools within the SEMrush software, but some key features this product offer can cost you an extra $200 a month.

My Opinion

While it is true that SEMrush digital marketing software does offer a wide variety of features and benefits, is it enough to spend your cash to pay for the subscription?

I have listed a few things to help you decide whether a SEMrush paid package is a go or a no.

It’s a GO if:

  • You manage an e-commerce store.
  • You operate a small or medium-sized business with a sufficient budget.
  • You run a rapidly growing brand.
  • You are a marketer looking to step up your game.
  • You are searching for a high-standard competitor analysis tool.
  • You are looking for software with comprehensive SEO and marketing tools all packed in one suite.
  • You are looking to improve your content through keyword analysis and topic research.
  • You want to have social media posting and tracking features as well.

It’s a NO if:

  • You think the manual and simplified method of keyword research is a better option.
  • You can find a lower-priced SEO tool that could get a similar result.
  • You do not find the user interface efficient.
  • You have already tried the SEMrush 30-day free trial to know first-hand how the paid plan works.

Conclusion

My overall rating

4.5 star rating

Simply put, the primary goal is to generate traffic to your website and convert it to sales. The process of achieving that can take a lot of time, knowledge, and hard work.

As I have reviewed above, SEMrush is equipped with a plethora of relevant features to help your website attain that goal.

Indeed, the Pro, Guru, and Business level packages offer plenty of features and benefits not available in the free version, is it worth what you are going to pay?

You need to find out, after all, you only want what’s best for your website and your business.

We introduced the best way to test SEMrush without risk at the start of this article. That is the SEMrush 30-day free trial.

You get to explore and experience all the functionalities of the paid subscriptions for thirty days.

While you are on the free trial, I strongly recommend you maximize the benefits of the product. Try to use all of the tools every single day.

This way, you can make an educated choice. Will you invest in a paid SEMrush subscription moving forward or not?
